The most convenient way to get to Big Pine and the Lower Keys is a flight into the Key West Airport (EYW). However, many visitors choose to fly into Miami (MIA) or Fort Lauderdale (FLL) as tickets are more affordable to those airports. If you happen to be brining your own small plane, there are two runways, one on Summerland Key and one on Lower Sugarloaf. The drive from Key West to Big Pine takes about 45 minutes; from Miami a little less than three hours, depending on traffic. To fully enjoy Big Pine and the Lower Keys, having a car is a good idea. While you might stay somewhere within a walk or bicycle ride of services, having a car will allow you to more fully explore the area’s scattered restaurants, bars, lands and waters.
