Divers spend days exploring the intricate life of Sombrero Reef, which is just seven miles offshore, but there are dozens and dozens of other prime dive and snorkel spots along Marathon’s vast stretch of barrier reef. All of this space makes for fewer crowds and plenty of intimacy and peace under the water. More advanced divers can also get their adrenaline pumping on several shipwrecks and deep drop-offs in the area. Those who prefer a more leisurely experience can watch the ocean critters through a glass-bottom boat, Anglers spend a lifetime pursuing sportfish in these waters, thanks to the Gulf Stream providing the ideal food and temperatures to draw them here. We haven’t even gotten to talking about waverunners, wakeboarding and all of that other jazz yet. It’s safe to say there is no shortage of water to explore around Marathon, but a good place to start are the listings below.
